In 2016, Colby College set out to build 3 new athletic fields behind its existing sports complex in order to prepare for the college’s largest single project in its history. One new, artificial turf and two grass fields were built on undeveloped land on the campus by R.J. Grondin & Sons in 2017. Once these were complete, work on the new $150 Million Athletic Complex began. The 350,000 square-foot complex will house the state’s first Olympic-sized pool, a new ice rink, 200-meter indoor track among many other amenities. R.J. Grondin & Sons prepared the site first by moving over 100,000 cubic yards of on-site fill to create a buildable site for the general contractor. As the building started going up, we excavated and backfilled for the concrete foundation while simultaneously installing all the water, sewer, gas and drainage utilities. Once all underground utilities were installed, site preparations continued with sub-base and base gravels to support the vehicular and pedestrian traffic. These projects will truly transform the campus as well as the surrounding communities who also utilize the facilities.
